CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE 2 - CHANGER LE PAYSAGE 2

No matter how thick and how unpleasant the vegetation of a region might be, a good landscaper will know how to come up with an environment that will be the envy of everyone. This begins with a mental picture of what the finished product will be, if the he/she does not get it right mentally, the work cannot be accomplished. However if the mental picture is right, the courage and strength to actualize the vision will be available. This does not mean there will be applause from all quarters but until we get it done mentally, we cannot accomplish it physically. This is what MentorAfrica set out to do since April 2013 and the response has been quite encouraging. I want to use this opportunity to thank all those who have been encouraging the blog through their reading and even sending comments to the blog. Without you all the efforts could have been in vain. As a sign of appreciation, I want to step back for a moment and ask for contributions to the blog from those who have shared in this experience. I invite articles that will help inspire youths and others, especially in Africa, to go higher and do better in the accomplishment of their dreams and visions. The articles should be between 200 and 300 words, the author should add a maximum of three lines of his/her bio and a picture if possible. We will also like to know how they came in contact with the blog. This should be sent to tagbosa@gmail.com and the author will be notified as soon as the article is published. Once again I say "THANK YOU"

No matter the quality of seed, the harvest will not be maximum yield if the soil is not fertile. There are things that have to be in the soil if the seed will arrive at its full potentials. Without these essential components, the quality of the seed will diminish. The same principle applies to our ideas just as we have been discussing in the last two write ups. Even after filtering our ideas and selecting the ones best suited for the accomplishment of our vision, if we do not float them with the appropriate people and in the proper environment, they won’t fly. Every vision must be built by a team; the visionary is just the driver of the dream so, if he/she fails to put together a good team there won’t be enough energy for the idea to grow. The other important component is putting in place a structure that will help define the parameters within which the various aspects of the vision would work. This is a bit like the farmer studying the weather and knowing what to do at every given time. This also helps to change strategies when challenges are encountered. Without these parameters, the idea would run wild like I river with heavy flow but which does not have a dam; what is supposed to give light and make life easy then becomes a destructive force.

WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?

Have you noticed how draining it can be when you are talking to some people and how refreshing you feel when you finish having a conversation with others? What is the difference in these two conversational experiences? I am speaking for myself; I feel really drained when I have a conversation with someone whose communication skills are not sharp and that for me means a conversation that has an ambiguous thread. In this case I will have to filter through the ideas the person is trying to convey. Fascinating for me though is the fact that the problem, most times, is not with the subject matter but the manner in which the person is presenting it. In some cases the information is verbose while in other cases, the information is too scanty. At times the language is too informal or too formal, at other times; the language is too light or too scholarly etc.
For me to enjoy a conversation, I should have minimal stress in understanding the thread because the person communicating should:
  • Be clear on what he/she wants to pass across
  • Understand the environment in which the communication is taking place
  • Use appropriate language, not to impress but to properly articulate
  • Choose a subject that is of interest to both of us
I do not want complete this article or should I say I do not know how to complete it so, I need any inputs that can help me communicate this idea without allowing it to become a drain on those reading it.
THEY SAY CONTENT IS KING AND I SAY COMMUNICATING IT IS QUEEN

THOUGHTS ARE SEEDS 2 - LES PENSEES SONT DES SEMENCES 2

Farmers do not plant every seed; they select the seed s that will give them the most yields. Good, healthy seeds will naturally produce a great harvest. If you are not an experienced and knowledgeable farmer, you will plant any seed that appears to be healthy and wonder why the harvest is poor. To get the best out of our efforts in life, we must endeavor to get as much information on any matter before making our choices. As thousands of thoughts go through our minds, we should be prepared to shift through with the filters of our knowledge and experience in order to select which ones we need to nurture and use for the accomplishments of our life’s ambition. Experience also helps the farmer to get seeds that will give him the ultimate harvest, they know where to get these from and they do not waste time going all over the place to find good seeds. People who have a vision should also be able to control what comes into their mental space; no one can spend all the time gathering weeds and expect to have a good harvest. You cannot sit around people who have nothing to offer your thought process in the direction you are going and expect to gather information that will birth the ideas you need to progress. You cannot read books and magazines, surf internet sites that do nothing but talk about things that have no bearing with the information you need to build a robust data bank that will help you in making decisions that will take you to your desired destination. To have good thoughts we need to build an information bank we can draw from at any given time.

Nobody carries out actions as a robot even if they think they are doing so; under duress, it is just a matter of life or death but still a decision. We all think before we act even when people say they did something on the spur of the moment; it does not mean they didn’t think, they just didn’t have enough time to think properly or they had enough knowledge and insight to make a decision without much thought. Thoughts are seeds and what we do with them will determine the direction in which our life goes. There is a popular quote from the Holy Bible “As a man thinketh in his heart so he is”, your life cannot rise above your thoughts and how you process them. That is why we must be careful the kind of information we allow into our system. People who allow any kind of information into their system without filtering which should be retained and which should be trashed are at risk of allowing those thoughts which have nothing to do with their development to contaminate their strengths. When seeds are not properly planted, the harvest is usually poor or nonexistent. Since our actions are a direct harvest of our thoughts, we should endeavor to watch what we allow to linger in our minds. The danger is more now because of the amount of information we have available to us in this era of information technology and social media.
