One hundred meters dash requires the concerted effort of one runner, and when the race is done, it is done. Any other runner in that category has to repeat the same process and get their own win. It is not so with the relay race, all the runners have to work together to win the price. The most important moment is the handing over of the baton. If this is not properly done, all the previous efforts, no matter how wonderful will be wasted. This is how life is supposed to be lived. Vision is supposed to be a continuum. One phase is finished and the work is handed over to the next generation and so on. The present generation will intepret in a way that suits their time and then carries the baton of the vision to the next one to intepret it in that generation. 

However, in most cases, that is not what happens. Many people are involved in the hundred meters dash and they often end up regretting their inability to handover a baton. Whatever they achieved, dies with them. At the height of that achievement, life looks fantastic. But when that is all there is to that life, the euphoria of that achievement soon fades away and there will definitely not be enough wind to carry it through to the next generations. People that come after them will have to start their own race from the starting block. All the effort put into that victorious dash is soon forgotten. 

It is a precious thing to be able to handover a vision to another generation. You can only do that if you have that intention from the very beginning. We must have the mindset of pursuing something that others will leverage on. All ideas have the ability to last generations. The idea will definitely evolve as societies evolve, but the thread will weave itself through all the intricases of every generation and still keep its original purpose. When we live like this, we stretch ourselves beyond our time into lives that we will never meet or know. There is a push that that kind of perspective gives that is more than the satisfaction of personal success. 

When you make up your mind that you want to run a relay race, everything you do will be focused on how you can successfully hand over that baton. It does not stop you from enjoying your race and your finish line but it gives you real joy to know that your efforts and contributions are going make all the other runners achieve the same joy and satisfaction that you had. This decision has to be taken even before the race starts for it to be able to propel us all the way through.

Chaque autre coureur de la même catégorie doit répéter le même processus et remporter sa propre victoire. Il en va autrement pour le relais : tous les coureurs doivent collaborer pour gagner. Le moment le plus important est la passation de témoin. Si celle-ci n'est pas effectuée correctement, tous les efforts précédents, aussi remarquables soient-ils, seront vains. C'est ainsi que la vie est censée se dérouler. La vision est censée être un continuum. Une étape s'achève et le travail est transmis à la génération suivante, et ainsi de suite. La génération actuelle interprète cette vision selon son époque, puis la transmet à la suivante pour qu'elle l'interprète à son tour.

Cependant, dans la plupart des cas, les choses ne se passent pas ainsi. Nombreux sont ceux qui participent au 100 mètres et qui finissent souvent par regretter leur incapacité à transmettre le témoin. Leurs accomplissements disparaissent avec eux. Au sommet de leur gloire, la vie paraît idyllique. Mais lorsque la vie se résume à cela, l'euphorie de cette réussite s'estompe rapidement et il n'y aura certainement pas assez d'élan pour la transmettre aux générations futures. Ceux qui viendront après devront recommencer leur propre course depuis la ligne de départ. Tous les efforts déployés pour cette victoire sont vite oubliés.

Transmettre une vision à une autre génération est un trésor. Cela n'est possible que si l'intention est présente dès le départ. Nous devons cultiver l'état d'esprit de poursuivre un projet dont les autres pourront s'inspirer. Toutes les idées ont le potentiel de traverser les générations. L'idée évoluera certainement avec les sociétés, mais le fil conducteur se tissera à travers les complexités de chaque génération tout en conservant son but initial. En vivant ainsi, nous nous projetons au-delà de notre époque, vers des vies que nous ne rencontrerons jamais. Cette perspective procure une force qui dépasse la simple satisfaction de la réussite personnelle.

Lorsque vous décidez de participer à un relais, tout ce que vous faites sera axé sur la manière de réussir la transmission du témoin. Cela ne vous empêche pas de profiter pleinement de votre course et de votre arrivée, mais cela vous procure une réelle joie de savoir que vos efforts et votre contribution permettront à tous les autres coureurs d'éprouver la même joie et la même satisfaction que vous. Cette décision doit être prise avant même le départ pour pouvoir nous porter jusqu'au bout.
