AFRICA IS A CONTINENT ON THE MOVE AND HER YOUTHS ARE HER GREATEST RESOURCE."We cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can always build our youth for the future."Franklin D. Roosevelt. MentorAfrica looks to help youths, through various life transition mentoring topics, to prepare youths for development and leadership that will help them change the African narrative whenever the opportunity arises.

THE FIRES OF PASSION - LES FEUX DE PASSION

It easy to get ‘fired up’ when you hear a message that
inspires you or motivates you. These days, especially with social media, they
come a dime a dozen. Many have launched out soon after such encounters only to
get burnt by the fires of passion. Some have recovered and continued after
learning from the experiences but for most, it has been the disastrous end of a
once acclaimed glorious journey. I live
in an environment where we experience wild fires at the end of the year during
the harmattan season. Most of these fires are wild and they can do a lot of
damage to the vegetation and the environment at large. However, when these
fires are lit by farmers who are preparing their land for the next farming
season, they control how far the fires can go. They stay there to monitor them
so they do not go beyond their boundaries and cause havoc. We have fires in our
lives that we call passion which drive us to achieve our dreams. Just like
physical fires, if we do not set perimeters and put in place measures to
control our passion we will end up hurting others or even destroying our
dreams. I see this a lot with African youths who are ‘under pressure’ to prove
that they can make a difference where the older generation has failed them. A
lot of people who suddenly ‘catch the fire’ start out with so much passion and
little information then they become frustrated halfway through. Some become so
obsessed that they become a nuisance to all around them, they find fault in
everything and make life unbearable for others. Success demands passion but
taming your passion and accepting that the road is full of learning curves is
most important. Passion does not guarantee success; passion that accommodates
limitations is the sure road to success. Bridle your passion by making room for
others, for mistakes and unexpected turns. Do have a beautiful day!
Monday, 23 September 2019

ARE YOU AT A CROSSROAD? - ÊTES-VOUS AU CARREFOUR?
Many times the wisdom to make the choice of quitting or
holding on, is what stands between us and success. We often get to the point
where we need to make this decision in order to advance. Many of us keep on
spending our energies on what we should let go off because of all that we have
invested. At what point should we let go? This is an issue because of the
slogan "winners do not quit" Do we continue flogging a dead horse
just because winners don't quit? What do we do at a crossroad? There are times
that we need to evaluate the situation honestly and have the courage to let go
when we see that the road is taking us nowhere. The problem is a lot of do not
want to be honest with others or even ourselves. Honesty can be hurtful most
times but it is the kind of hurt that signals maturity. If you are not mature
enough to deal with the truth in any situation, the pain of deception, failure
and regret would be nothing compared to the hurt of facing the situation head
on and making any uncomfortable decision. Letting go does not always mean
quitting, at times it means we are people of courage who are not afraid to
admit that we have failed at a certain project. Failure is not an end in itself,
it is just an opportunity to understand that there are other ways of arriving
at our destination. In fact, the joy of starting after a setback is that you
have the advantage of hindsight which was not available to you the first time. When
we understand the true nature of failure, we conquer the fear of failure and
embrace it as a learning curve which will help us know how to accomplish our
dream in a better way. Enjoy an excellent week!Saturday, 21 September 2019

MAXIMISE YOUR BRAIN - MAXIMISEZ VOTRE CERVEAU

I heard a man talking on radio sometime ago, although I can’t quite
remember what the topic was, anyway. The gist was on how we should put our
brains to use. He said working your brain demands a conscious effort; he added
that he had observed that many people are too lazy to exercise their brain.
The next day, I actually started meditating unconsciously about what I had heard and I realized that the degree of mental laziness among us Africans
is astronomical. The problem is not the color of the skin or the size of the
brain; after all, organ transplants do not select color; it is the refusal to
maximize the capacity of the brain that makes it look as if one brain is
superior to another. While some are using their brains to figure out how to
make things better and life more functional, others are spending hours in front
of the television, playing games and entertaining themselves in many other ways
that have been thought out by those who work their brains. As we enjoy what
others have done to make life comfortable for us, we should not allow our
brains to lie fallow. The inventions we have enjoyed and which have made life easy for us, should challenge us to work our brains
and add our own contributions. Some of our brains only function when we want to
criticize what others have done; I wish we could just push our brains a little
further to see what we can do differently to make what we do not like something
that will benefit people who might have the same concerns.
Monday, 10 June 2019
