“It’s gonna get harder before it gets easier. But it will
get better, you just have to make it through the hard stuff first” – Billy Cox
Some years ago I moved into a new property and the previous
occupant was really sad she could not carry along a particular tree. It was a treasure to her because
in her culture the leaves were highly nutritious and used to prepare several
delicacies. Although I really did not have any use for it, I kept it like a
souvenir for her. By December that year the tree began to shed its foliage which
was normal because of the harsh harmattan weather. But by early January, I really
began to panic, I thought I had done some damage to its root because it did not
have a single leaf left. I had never seen a tree that bare in my whole life
except the ones that had been infected and were dying. This made me really
anxious after all the efforts at keeping this tree in honour of the woman. One morning, as I was taking my normal morning walk, my son was on his was to work and I told him that the tree was dead. However, that same evening
as I worked by the tree, I looked and there were very tiny leaves
sprouting all over the tree, I almost collapsed; in about a week the whole tree
was covered with green leaves. Recently, my son-in-law helped me make a garden
and transplanted some plants to make way for some other crops, if not for my
previous experience, I would have thought that the plant in the picture would
not make. This is how it looks after about two weeks of transplant. When undergoing some transitions in life, there are times when everything looks dead because we have to make a complete lifestyle change
to make room for the necessary progress. We may have to leave behind the familiar to confront the unknown. We might lose friends, change
location, start a new career etc but we have to realise there is no meaningful progress
without significant change. Any transition in life without pain may not be a
worthwhile transition, so endure the pain and sometimes the loneliness in order
to enjoy the gain. Enjoy your day!
