Character keeps you where your talent takes you, they say. If this is true then we need to pay very close attention to our character building if we intend to enjoy the fruits of our labor in such a way that we do not regret all our labors as most do on our death beds. The most important ingredient in character building is opposition because it helps us to sift the important from the trivial things in life. We are faced everyday by people who are very successful in their careers but have lost to drugs and other degrading situations due to character flaws. We might argue that some rebound but there are lot more who sink because of these infamous lifestyles. People who do not want to face opposition cut corners and do untoward things that later come back to haunt them. For those of us who are keen on developing something that can outlast us, we must see opposition as a friend and not as a foe.

The kind of things we do when we are up against the opposition reveal the true motives of our dreams. Your motives do not change your gifts, talents or vision but they decide what you are willing to do to accomplish your dreams. The courage and perseverance that are needed to fulfill your vision can only be borne by those who understand that it is not about fame and fortune but about what will benefit the society at large. When your motives are fame and fortune, you will change course as soon as you hit one or two brick walls. Nobody who wants an easy life should bother about accomplishing a vision; they should just be satisfied with living life or merely existing. Allow opposition to test your vision, that is the only way you can achieve it and be satisfied.

It is the fear of obstacles that make people to comprise on their journey to accomplishing their dreams and once you compromise, you lose complete ownership to your vision. This means you cannot interpret your dream the way you have envisioned it, you will have to tailor it in order to please those with whom you have compromised. Most people become fearful and compromise because they didn’t envisage any obstacles; when people have a dream, they live in a euphoric state. We must come down from the clouds if we intend to accomplish our vision and that means we must be prepared to tackle the opposition and overcome all the challenges that come against us. Against this backdrop, we should realize that all opposition does is to try to stop us which means if we are ready to fight they become stepping stones to higher grounds no matter their shape or form. There is the story of the horse that fell into a well and all efforts to rescue it proved abortive. According to the story, the owner decided to bury it by filling the well with sand, however, with every load of sand, the horse stepped on it and moved up until it got to the height where the owner could see it and get it out. Opposition makes you strong and brings out the best in you.
