We all have periods of our lives that we would like to erase if it were possible. But this is not possible because what has happened has happened. What we do with those "dark" periods of our lives is what we must pay attention to. Denying the wounds we have had in life is foolish because they will always leave scars as reminders but allowing ourselves to be swallowed up by those periods is catastrophic. Many of us stare permanently at our scars and constantly relive those situations, this holds us from carrying on with our present and seeing the potentials that life has for us. No matter how dark a particular period of our live is, we must not allow it to cast shadows on the light we have and need to navigate our present moment. Slavery and colonization has so darkened the lives of many Africans, it is difficult for them even their quiet times to think of life without reference to the damage that Africans have suffered due to these dark times. Many are continually focusing on the scars without realizing that some scars never totally fade. It is when you allow your scars to define who you are that life becomes unbearable for you. For others, their scars help them to tell the story of how far they have come because they look at them and decide that the story will end in victory. Their scars help them to focus on what to do to avoid a repeat of past mistakes and it helps them get a better perspective on the way life works. When you allow the mistakes and past failures to drown you, you are denied the joy of dreaming and accomplishing your dream. You are denied the joy of really living because you see everything through the lenses of some unpleasant event. Even if you could erase the physical scars, the mental scars hardly ever fade completely. There is nothing you can do about the scars but you can either make them into trophies or stumbling blocks, the choice is yours. Have a great weekend!
AFRICA IS A CONTINENT ON THE MOVE AND HER YOUTHS ARE HER GREATEST RESOURCE."We cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can always build our youth for the future."Franklin D. Roosevelt. MentorAfrica looks to help youths, through various life transition mentoring topics, to prepare youths for development and leadership that will help them change the African narrative whenever the opportunity arises.
