IT'S JUST A SEASON - C'EST SIMPLEMENT UNE SAISON
Life, they say, is cyclical. Seasons come and seasons go. No season lasts forever, so its effects should not be allowed to continue forever. Fashion designers start to prepare for a season collections long before the season starts because they know that each season is unique and demands a certain style. There are those who, however do not like to change with the seasons, they continue to dress in the fashion of another season. If they want to be honest with themselves, they will agree that it is quite uncomfortable to wear clothes meant for the cold season during the hot season. Just like climatic seasons, our life is a cycle of seasons, some are more pleasant than others. Many of us want to carry the effects of the season we love with us for a very long period. Some hold on to unpleasant seasons and allow them to negatively affect their lives for as long as they allow them. Unless you are ready to change with the seasons and work with the present conditions of your life, you will not make any meaningful progress. Allow life to make use of all the elements of the different seasons, that way you can experience life in all its colours. Your life is a tapestry, all the colours are important for its beauty to be admired and its effects to be felt.

A friend of mine sent me a presentation by someone during the 23rd Economic Summit in Nigeria that has been making the rounds. When I finished listening to the speech, my husband who had also seen the video said "That was a beautiful presentation, not so?" My answer was that we do not lack "heads" in Africa, we lack "hearts". If nations developed by well crafted and beautiful policies, Nigeria and possibly many other African nations would have been the envy of the world. We have the brains to analyse and make good policies but we do not have the "hearts" to implement them. It is not the political will we lack, what we lack is goodwill that is exhibited in integrity and patriotism. I have had the unfortunate privilege of talking with intending political office holders who are not even in the "old brigade"... it is pathetic. They have no intention whatsoever to make a difference, the price is high and they are not ready to pay it. The political structure is set to produce leaders that will fail irrespective of their political affiliations. When a society does not have people who are willing to sacrifice for the collective good of the people, it will always produce leaders that are corrupt and ineffective. We have to push past our "heads" and develop hearts that are willing to sacrifice and serve others, that is what those who are more developed today did to make it to where the are today. No nation was born prosperous, people of passion and goodwill had to sacrifice their blood, sweat and tears to build strong prosperous nations, it won't be different in Africa. Africa is blessed with highly intellectual and intelligent people but unfortunately, that is not translated to the development of the continent.

IT IS CLOSE BY - C'EST TOUT PRES
Wetin you dey find for Sokoto dey for inside sokoto.- Nigerian pidgin proverb
Sokoto is one the farthest towns northwest of Nigeria, for most, it is quite a distance. Sokoto which is pronounced "shokoto" is traditional trousers worn by most Nigerians but it originated from western Nigeria. What the proverb is saying is that most times, what we are looking for far off is within reach. Many people want to be famous, so they look for how to do something that will attract world acclaim; most never get there. It is not because they are not talented, it is just that they are looking for a harvest without sowing a seed. Many famous people today did not start because they were looking for fame, they started by trying to solve a personal problem or one that which was in their immediate community. Telephone started with someone looking for better ways to communicate with his mother with hearing impediment. Facebook started with friends looking for better ways to communicate among themselves on campus. The list goes on from people looking for how to make commuters more personal to those who wanted to make phones mobile, all started with solving a problem that will make life better for them and easier for everyone else. Stop looking for how to win international awards, just concentrate on taking on the challenges around you with the resources available in your environment and life will open up for you. Africans are too busy trying to live like other people that they cannot think of developing what is around them. They want to always enjoy what others have developed with their sweat. All we think about is acquiring a luxurious lifestyle, never giving any thought to investing in creativity, innovation, invention and production. Halls of fame are not for names of those with the most luxurious lives, they are for the names of those who have made a difference by their accomplishments in human development.
- Proverbe nigerian
