ARE YOU LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL? - VIVEZ-VOUS PLEINEMENT LA VIE?

Needless to say that that definition is putting so much pressure on people that the incidences of depression and suicide have gone up according to recent studies. A fulfilled life cannot never lead to that kind of selfish, inordinate ambition, it gives joy because of the results that it sees in the lives of others. Living life to the full means that your life is a source of inspiration, a leverage for others. You have to understand, decide and create what makes life worth living for you. It means making up your mind to understand and accept who you are. The worst thing that can happen to anybody is to regret what you have no control over. Many people wish they were someone else or they are from somewhere else. Many become so disgruntled and miserable that they cannot live life to the full because they are too stressed out to see opportunities all around them to make a difference. We all know that opportunities are disguised as challenges and if you are not living on purpose, you would hardly see them. My principle vision is to help prepare the upcoming generation of Africans to be mentally ready to make initiate the changes so required for the development of this continent. Hypothetically, let's assume that all the required structures and systems suddenly fall in place, will we have people who are mentally ready to build on these foundations? What is the use of preparing systems for unprepared people? In order to make any lasting impact, we must create little pockets of the kind of society we desire to see everywhere we are found. Do not wait until you are in leadership before you begin to serve and establish the necessary parameters for development. We have to become creative if we have any intention of being a part of the solution to Africa's challenges. More positive little steps and less amplification of the negatives. Start doing what you can and stop constantly looking for those who are not doing what they should be doing. Do have a wonderful day! AFRICA: THE CLOUDS ARE GATHERING - AFRIQUE: LES NUAGES SE RASSEMBLENT
Climatic conditions are pivotal to the vegetation and well being of any environment and its inhabitants. When conditions are favourable and the ecosystem is not interrupted by unwanted elements, it good to see how nature takes care of its own. Everything in its right proportion is what life needs to give us the best in our endeavours. Little drops of rain here and there do not do much good to the vegetation but, when there is more rain than sunshine during the raining season, the crops are happy and farmers are satisfied.

Life needs all the seasons to be complete in their proper cycle, the prolongation of any particular season spells disaster. The problem with Africa is that we have been in a prolonged drought of weak leadership and all the systems have either withered or are completely dead. From the little experience I have gathered in my new found love for gardening, one would do anything to get water to the plants if one intends to have any harvest. When the clouds begin to gather after a long spell of dry weather, it puts smiles on the farmer's face. Africa has suffered devastation in her leadership but little drops of rain are falling through a certain percentage of the citizenry who are beginning to see things in a different light. Much of the attitudinal change is neither visible nor palpable right now, but if the drops of enlightened and determined citizens begin to fall into our institutions, one day, sooner rather than later, the rains will come. Let us keep talking and enlightening ourselves even as we make the little difference we can in our circles of influence. What you are doing might seem like a drop but from the clouds of discontent that have been gathering, you never know when the rain of change will begin to fall. MERITOCRACY AND SERVICE - MERITOCRATIE ET SERVICE

The main problem is that people in power who have no business in leadership. They do not have and have never had the interest of anybody apart from their miserable selves, at heart. In that kind of situation, meritocracy is almost totally absent, nepotism and mediocrity are king. Corruption has been enthroned and it will take an education war to dethrone it. Only those who think service can move any nation forward. So long as one is there to serve, even insufficient resources begin to achieve great strides. We all know how stretch our finances when we encounter hard times, so nobody with the the mind to serve will fail; there will always be a way. The saddest part is when we have people who used to advocate for social justice in the corridors of power and they suddenly forget all the desire to make a difference. This goes to show that they were frauds because if they were sincere and the system is stifling them, they would quit. That is the only way they would prove their sincerity and save their integrity. Even in the private sector, many CEOs are very exploitative because of the poor economic climate. Servant leaders are not only needed in the public sector, a leader should serve anywhere they are found. When you are not interested in the welfare or growth of your staff or your employment is flawed with favouritism, you are not serving. Service creates room for people to grow and be more productive. Until we start thinking service, our development will remain stagnated. If you do not start thinking of serving those you come in contact with now, you will not serve when you are given a larger platform. Service is an attitude, it is not a show. Enjoy your day! You are only as successful as the impact you make on those who are under your influence. If your immediate environment does not benefit from your contributions, you have to rethink your path to success. For us Africans, the earlier we realise that our development is in our own hands and look at what we have to solve our challenges, we would be stuck as beggars. As a society, everyone would usually look to the government for its direction, leadership and motion towards making the environment better.

While this is true, this is only the half-truth of any developed society. A developed society is a developed community where the factors of development do not reside in these arms of infrastructure, facilities and amenities but in the people that make up that community. A developed environment is a developing environment, where what was available yesterday is constantly upgraded to the needs of today by the people who inhabit that community. There is no need to validate that statement because if we only look at the trends we would see the definitions take their natural course. Being developed is a term that was coined to mean being up-to-date with modern science, biology, technology and methodologies of doing things faster, better cheaper and more efficiently. This is the reason why we have factories, industries, newer technologies and innovative ideas that create a more interesting future for the coming generations.

CONCENTRATE ON YOUR CANVAS - CONCENTREZ SUR VOTRE TOILE

When you believe, for whatever reason, that your contributions would be insignificant, there so much anyone can do make you believe otherwise. You cannot keep allowing the prejudices of others and society in general, to stop you from expressing who you really are. You have to continue to express yourself, put your "foolishness" out there until people begin to see the beauty, the wisdom and the creativity. Our life is a work of art that should inspire others and help them along the way. What you paint on that canvas is seen by so many that you may not even be aware of. When we are conscious of how important our life is and that it is interwoven with that of others in society, we will be more careful how we live. Your carefree expression of your life and gifts could be the leverage someone else needs to open their wings and come out of their cocoon. We are all leaders in the sense that we influence others directly or indirectly with our lives. Many are too selfish to consider others, until we see life differently, no leadership school can change society. Leaders who cannot understand this principle will have the title but their leadership would not make a difference in the lives of their constituents, no matter the training they get. The mistake most of us make is to keep looking at other people's canvas with a view to criticizing it while our own painting is left unfinished. This means that those who are supposed to draw inspiration from our paintings are left unattended. It is time to realise the importance of our painting. Let us turn our attention to our canvas and do what we alone have the ability to do to make life better for others. Enjoy your day! TAKE RESPONSIBILITY...CHANGE IS POSSIBLE - ASSUMEZ LA RESPONSABILITÉ ... UN CHANGEMENT EST POSSIBLE

Feeling angry, sad or disgusted and holding discussions on what is wrong in the community is not enough to change it. We have to help do anything we can to help move the community in the right direction. We have to mark our opponent; our opponent is anything that is an abnormality in our community. I just heard someone say on television that change is a possibility to anyone who is ready to take responsibility. Parents and head of institutions must be ready to do what is necessary and right in order to be the example of good values and development they want to see. The people who perpetuate corruption and other societal ills are not aliens or ghosts. Regardless of the number of children there are in a family, if parents abdicate their responsibilities, their products will be a nuisance to society. A family of what people call "a reasonable number" with an absentee father and an irresponsible mother can cause more havoc than a large family where core values are entrenched by parents who take time to carry out their responsibility. This also applies to organisations and institutions, good leadership and success are not dictated by numbers, they are dependent upon the heart and strength of the leader. Business schools and leadership institutes are not magic wands, we need to mark our opponents to make sure they do not wreak havoc in our communities. Secure your space, you do not have to have a large space like a politician or a CEO to make an impact. Enjoy your day! MY STORY: GREATNESS OR IMPACT? - MON HISTOIRE: GRANDEUR OU IMPACT?

The "worship" of celebrities has almost everyone scrambling for the piece of that celebrity pie. The focus is now mainly on how we can join the league of those making the headlines not because of the impact they have made but because of their wealthy lifestyle. We want the world to revolve around us without adding anything to the development of human existence. In Africa there is so much to be done to improve the society yet we are busy using our talents to accumulate stuff. We want to be remembered by the life of luxury we lived and not for the innovations we made to better life on the continent. This is the reason why many in positions of leadership, especially the politicians, are more interested in the celebrity lifestyle even if means depriving everyone else of their basic rights as citizens. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you are pursuing your dream? Is it so that you will be "great" or so that you can make a lasting impact in your community and the world? When your story is told, will it inspire others to becoming a better version themselves? People do not leave a lasting legacy by their estate, they do by their life of intention and impact, innovations and inventions that helped life become better for others. Enjoy your week! Shinning the Light: Emerging Success Stories from the African Continent
By Stanley Umezulike

At the age of 24, Cameroonian engineer, Arthur Zang
developed Africa’s first handheld medical computer tablet that help diagnose
people with heart disease. His patented
invention Cardiopad, is a 25 centimeter touch-screen medical tablet that
enables health workers to perform cardiac tests such as electrocardiograms
(ECG) at far away remote areas and beyond. The results will then be wirelessly
sent to doctors via the Internet for interpretation. Zang’s invention will help
millions of people who suffer from heart related problems, most especially
those in the rural areas. Cardiopad has been validated by the Cameroonian
scientific community as extremely effective and it is currently undergoing
trials in a number of medical hospitals in Cameroon.

When you consider the positive paradigm shift
currently going on in this continent, you will discover that these success stories
are just the tip of the iceberg. From the young single mother in Nigeria
selling Akara in order to send her children to school to the young tailor in a
village in Uganda who believes in his dreams of becoming a Fashion Designer - every
day, African youths are breaking barriers, changing the world in their own
unique way. But we need to do more to encourage those who are about to give up
and quit because of the harsh life conditions in their countries. My simple
message to my fellow African youths is this – wherever you are, no matter your
background, whatever you have, all you need is a positive attitude and a
resilient spirit, and you will achieve your dreams. Keep going. Let’s build a
new Africa.
There is hope at the end of the horizon.

Continue. Construisons une nouvelle Afrique.
Il y a de l'espoir au bout de l'horizon.

Despite the Sad tales coming from the continent,
Africa’s glorious past is resurrecting again. Today, Africa has the most
youthful workforce in the world, and this gives Africans the rare opportunity
to rewrite their story, to move from being labelled as the largest consumers in
the world, to producing the leading innovators and entrepreneurs of the 21st
century. And I agree with the words of Ms. Staci Warden, the executive director
of the Milken Centre for Capital Markets Development, that ‘this is Africa’s
Century.’ Despite the huge obstacles facing the young people in the continent,
the continent newest generation are breaking barriers, not only to write their
names on the sands of time, but also to help humanity win.

EYES ON THE GOAL
By Stanley Umezulike
The major
failure that holds most African youths back is that in spite of their best
intentions, they easily lose focus.
It takes
courage and self-discipline to stay on course, rise above the temptations and
focus on the main goals no matter what the obstacles are.

Pursue
goals that align with your true purpose, goals that you feel their intensity in
your heart and stay true to them till they become a reality.
Five
years ago, my friend Tony quit his job and decided to start his own business. He
didn’t have much money, no connection. The obstacles were too great. All his
other friends discouraged him. I looked at him and I saw the passion. I simply
told him to go on and take action. He did. At the beginning, it was difficult.
The roads were filled with obstacles and even more obstacles. The easiest thing
for him to do would have been to close down the business and start looking for
another job. But Tony was stubborn. He held on and he kept his eyes on the
goal.
Five
years later, he had surprised even himself. It always seems impossible until it
is done. Today Tony has a successful business, doing what he loves. Life’s
challenges even made him stronger. He is a good example for young Africans that
are willing to pursue their dreams despite the odds stacked against them.
From his
experience, he told me that it’s not really the money that matters the most.
Every beginning is always going to be difficult. What really matters is the
passion to see it through the difficulties.
Ironically,
most people that inherited a lot of fortune ended up squandering it on petty
things within few years, not knowing what and where to focus on.
Surprisingly,
many people that had achieved so much in life started with little or no money.
But they succeeded because they had a goal they focused on till it became a
reality.
Even if
you are discouraged by your friends; eyes on the goal. Hindered by an obstacle?
Eyes on the goal. Want to give in to temptations? Eyes on the goal. Tried and
failed? Eyes on the goal.
The fire
of your passion to achieve your goal will make all the difference. Whatever you
believe you can accomplish, you will accomplish. Try, fall down, get up and
keep going.
Starve
your distractions and feed your focus. Overcoming life’s challenges will only
upgrade you to an unstoppable force of nature. By then, achieving whatever
goals you seek in life will merely become for you – a daily routine.
