BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA 4 - ENTRE LE DIABLE ET LA MER 4
Education is no use if it doesn't help you understand who
you are and what you need to do to contribute your quota to humanity. I was
reading an article recently on the internet and was very shocked by the
complaints coming from a citizen of one the world’s most sort after developed societies.
If the opinion presented by the writer just ended in what she was saying in the
article, I would not have been surprised because, after all, we all have a
right to express our perspectives. What really got me were the various comments
that fellow citizens were contributing to buttress her point. These are systems
that we in these parts of the world would die for yet, these individuals were
pointing out the damage that their present system was doing to their wards and
the principal complaint was that the system was suppressing the creativity of
their children and they were considering drastic measures such as home
schooling their children. This might not be the opinion of the majority of the
citizens of the said society but the fact that such comments should come from
them was unbelievable to me.
One of the areas where are lot of us are between the devil
and the deep blue sea is that of our school curriculum especially in the
private primary and secondary schools where children are now being made to
study and prepare for foreign examinations. In order to do this, all cultural
focus has been removed from Nigeria and replaced by foreign history and
socio-cultural matters. Children are introduced , for example, to the house of
Tudor and the have clue about Oba Overawven, Queen Amina, Jaja of Opobo and the
other outstanding dynasties. It is so frustrating now because the children are
even being forced to speak in a foreign accent in their own fatherland; this
absolutely absurd. Where do we go from here? What is the ministry of Education
doing about this foolishness? What are Parent/Teachers Associations doing? Have
we reached a point where we have lost all reason? People are complaining that
their system is suppressing creativity; that is small matter. Here, we are
producing aliens who are neither Americans nor Europeans nor Africans. We say
the public schools are not pulling their weight; which is better, half-baked
students (the devil) or aliens (the deep blue sea)
YOUR COMMENTS WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED!
