CELEBRATING MEDIOCRITY - CÉLÉBRER LA MÉDIOCRITÉ

Patriotism in a nation where no one appreciates the essence of that word is considered pure foolishness. Many even look at you with suspicion as if you are trying get attention or something from the government of the day. My brother took a decision to buy mainly made in Nigeria goods just like I decided to buy nigerian grown rice. We were discussing recently and we were both almost at the end of our patriotic rope because of the quality of the products. Yet you see some that are partisan hailing sub-standard products as if they could compete with global standards. I have no problem with celebrating indigenous products, in fact I am great fan of producing goods that will encourage the economy and general development of the continent. However, celebrating mediocrity does more harm than good to development. We have too much at stake to celebrate anything just because it is african. When Fela was celebrated because of his afrobeat genre, everyone could appreciate how that projected the african music. Theatre productions in the sixties and seventies were pieces of art that were appreciated worldwide, they were not just about money like we see these days in our movie productions. Meanwhile, there is so much hype of these mediocre albeit offensive productions in the entertainment industry. We should stop celebrating badly made prototypes just because it is by an african child. We can acknowledge these efforts but we have to be honest with ourselves if we have any plans of competing in the world stage. For Africa to move forward, we need to cut a niche for ourselves by doing whatever we are projecting with passion and innovation and not just for the monetary gain. Enjoy your day!
