PURPOSE DRIVES DISCIPLINE - LE BUT ENGENDRE LA DISCIPLINE

It is funny to see girls who would never agree to do any form exercise until they get into a serious relationship or they are preparing for their wedding and they become very disciplined at working out to have a perfect figure. They would religiously exercise without any external influence. Even when they feel sore they would continue because they are driven by a purpose. Money to live a good life will make many people conscientious workers any day. Health challenges will make many eat right even when they do not enjoy the diet. Life without a purpose is a breeding ground for indiscipline. The word "discipline" only frightens those who are not passionate about anything. When you are driven by purpose, discipline comes naturally. People driven by purpose wake up with a plan for the day and follow it through as much as they can because they have a reason to do what they are doing. Even when people do not love their job, they maintain a level of discipline because it affords them purchasing power. This purpose alone is enough to drive discipline; discipline is not an art in itself, it is a product of purpose. This can be something you love to do or money you need to live. Whatever it is,  purpose will drive you to do things in a structured way; a disciplined way.

SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED - QUELQUE DE CHOSE NOUVEAU, QUELQUE CHOSE EMPRUNTÉ

There is a program I watch regularly called "Something New, Something Borrowed" which talks about whether a bride will wear her mother's wedding gown or choose a new one of her own. What brought this program to my mind as I was thinking about what to share today is the fact that the bride makes her decision based on how it adapts to her style. It is agreed to a large extent that no idea is new, in fact the Bible says that there is nothing new under the sun. When we have a dream to pursue, it is important to know that its realisation depends on what others have already done or are in the process of pursuing. For some, they do a complete carbon copy and many Africans fall in this category. For us "something borrowed" is systems and structures that our ancestors operated before colonisation while "Something New" are systems and structures handed down from our colonial masters. Many times, we behave as if before the era of slavery we had no systems and structures but that is not true at all. What has happened is that we cannot continue in the ways of our ancestors neither should we forget about them and completely copy our colonial masters. Like the brides do, whatever we decide to choose , we must be able to adapt it to what works for us. Individuals have to come to this understanding even before the society arrive at a process that works for all us.

WE CAN DO SOMETHING! - NOUS POUVONS FAIRE QUELQUE CHOSE!

Talking about the future of Africa can be quite exhausting because most of us have completely lost hope and are not interested. I do not blame anyone who is weary about arguments, criticisms and analysis. Words fail to express the situation in Africa and what her citizens are feeling about the present harsh realities. There are so many possibilities and opportunities yet nothing seems to be going on. Africans are turned towards the outside to live the good life, foreigners are looking to Africa to enrich themselves. In between these two groups is the group of corrupt leaders and their cohorts who are milking the continent with the help of even predators from around the world. Some of us are "foolish" enough to believe something can still be done to remedy the situation. We also have the human resources, all we need to do is harness the rich talents that are found here. For me, even if one can not do much, one can do a little with a lot of passion and see what happens from there. Joseph's place Mentoring Africa wishes to help youths between the ages of 14-30 who are willing to explore life, discover who they are and what they can offer society to improve human life. One-on-one mentoring is available on Whatsapp from Monday-Friday from 13hrs-16hrs (WAT) Let us do what we can while we still have time. Enjoy your day!

WE NEED TO COME OUT - IL FAUT NOUS EN SORTIR

Africa is undergoing infusion because of a chronic disease: underdevelopment. A remedy for her recovery is a curative cocktail: bringing about a paradigm shift for moral rearmament (good governance and exemplary leadership by our leaders and a civic conscience for civil society) creating value to shift our economies and bring them into honest circles for the welfare of the whole population and not only a tiny part of privileged.-Cecile Thiakane

The business of taking Africa out of "life support" like we discussed in a previous post http://mentoringafrica.blogspot.com/2017/01/heartbeat-of-our-land-battement-du.html?spref=tw is a task that must be done by all those who dare to believe in an Africa with a developed and stable future. This is a very far-fetched possibility that some even believe will never happen. The redemptive cocktail that my dear friend and fellow compatriot has outlined above is something we can all work towards if we so desire. A paradigm shift is indispensable to a forward movement of Africa. Those who believe in the possibility of a developed Africa must continue to speak up and proffer solutions using whatever medium they have until others begin to see what they see. We cannot allow the upcoming generations to continue in this "foolishness" Until we see the need to build a vibrant continent we will continue to live with a defeatist mentality and make little or no progress. What this means is that we will allow the youths continue to think that the only way forward is corruption and underdevelopment. We will keep speaking and for me that is not a "nagging criticism" of what is going on in Africa but rather talking about how to forge a way forward. Enjoy your weekend!

CAN YOU SEE IT? - POUVEZ-VOUS LE VOIR?

Sight is one of the very important features we need to progress as we pursue our vision in life. This means that until you can see or visualise something, you cannot pursue it successfully and accomplish it. The mental picture you create helps you to plan and accomplish a project. Until you can imagine it, you cannot achieve it. We can plan, discuss and work as much as we can, if we have no mental picture that drives us on, we will quit immediately we are confronted by challenges. Many who look for excuses at every turn do not have a strong image of what they want to accomplish. Most Africans do not have a picture of a developed Africa so, no matter how patriotic they want to be, they quit even before they can contribute anything to her growth. We can criticise and analyse because of the present picture of the continent but we cannot conceive a mental picture of a future Africa that is stable and progressive. We will be deceiving ourselves if we think it is an easy picture to paint because we have to see through the debris of slavery, colonisation, bad governance, corruption, poverty etc. This is quite a tough call but it is not an impossible call. WE MUST START BY CREATING AN IMAGE OF THE AFRICA WE DESIRE. Enjoy your day!

HEARTBEAT OF OUR LAND - BATTEMENT DU COEUR DE NOTRE TERRE

Africans should know that they can only develop by existing. By feeling the heartbeat of the land and dancing accordingly to its needs. We need to listen to learn, learn to know, know to apply and apply to create. – Tanho Attah
Most times, I feel that the pulse of Africa is low and at times even non-existent. It looks like we are constantly on "life support" and would stop to breathe immediately this is taken off. All our organs are failing; culture, education, economy, politics... We need to start working to bring up the "pulse rate" so that the next generation can pick it up and start doing things that will help the continent return to a healthy heartbeat. We need to start listening to learn not criticize or simply copy. There are no one-size-fits all solutions to national or personal problems; we need take knowledge, adapt it and create our own solutions. It is time for us to understand that we cannot continue to be on "life support",we have enough "oxygen" in this continent to survive if we are bold enough to take off the support.

Africa has been informally branded as a consumer continent, even her natural resources have to be processed and sold  back to her for consumption. Unfortunately, it does not look like this phenomenon is going to be changing anytime soon. Which brings to mind the way the average african views life; others produce we are content to consume... That is why even our educational system is geared towards survival and not innovation or production. All we want is to make  money to get the basic things in life and if we are fortunate, progress to acquiring the luxuries of life. There is the very strong argument about our totally weak financial institutions when it comes to investment in innovation and entrepreneurship. Be that as it may, the average African, even those who can afford to send their children to developed nations for education, do so for the same commercial reasons. How can we live a good life with what others have sweated to produce for mankind? To make matters worse, we are now integrating or should I say, turning to foreign curricula to make us more marketable abroad. When we will we have Africans whose desire is to make an impact on the African continent in spite of the present realities? At times I wonder if the developed societies fell from the sky or they had to face huge challenges to get to where they are presently. Just wondering... Are we educating ourselves to continue to survive or are we working towards having some relevance in the global stage? Hollywood makes movies that provoke technology to catch up with them and we have seen it work many times; what is our media provoking....

Je me demande simplement ...

IS AFRICA OVERPOPULATED?

Is Africa too crowded?
Without entering into any number discussions, I would like to point out that I always considered that a family of 27 children was too numerous until I realized that if they were well educated and trained, this will be far more beneficial for the country than a small family of 2 people not trained at all.
Now the whole problem lies in how we prepare our youth for tomorrow.
If we do not deal with it now, it's better if it's small. But if on the contrary this youth is well taken into account, the effect of the number can only be beneficial.
Afro-optimist (not beat at all, line mover) I do not despair that we will change course even at the price of a revolution! - Makhtar Lo

Some countries have an aging population, others are threatened by a population explosion, yes there are permanent interactions between
Populations in constant evolution and geopolitical configurations, hence the need to embrace the problems in their entirety ...
And that is why we can not just say that the exponential increase of the African population is an opportunity, there will unfortunately be all the threats related to it. There may be a large consumer market, but they should already have purchasing power. Without creating value and wealth for a final reduction of poverty, this is going to be impossible ...
So we must pass from a phenomenon of vicious circles to another of virtuous circles ... - Cecile Thiakane

This are the contributions of two of my friends to a post by another friend on the dangers of what I may call the "mindless" procreation by Africans. What interests me however is the fact that helping the next generation understand their role in the development of the continent is crucial. They must be educated in a way that they see the destiny of the continent in their hands which is a far cry from what we have presently. Most of us are now educating our children to be able to escape the harsh realities of the continent, so whether the number we have is few or many, we should make them come to terms with their responsibility towards taking the continent to the next level.

EVEN WHEN YOU WANT TO SERVE

Almost everyone agrees that leadership is about service. At times it feels cliche to talk about servant-leaders, many do not really understand what this entails. Are you aspiring to serve so you can be called a good leader or you are serving because you are passionate about making life better for others? I have seen many in my nation who we thought were driven by a desire to improve society only to see another side of them immediately an opportunity to came for them to walk their talk. Leadership is not in rhetorics, it is in compassionate and honest actions. Think it through before you aspire for any leadership position. Enjoy a great weekend!

WHAT CAN I DO? - QUE PUIS-JE?

"The path to a winning Africa
It is necessary to awaken consciences so that the Africans themselves take charge in a responsible way. No one will give the Africans what they have to find out.
There are real pragmatic solutions to awaken consciences, to better channel the energies, to enhance the talents available, and above all to give each of us a greater sense and direction to his own life ' - Gilles Atayi
When we see quotes like this one that was posted by Lansana Gagny Sakho on Facebook, the first thought that most Africans would have, especially the youths, would be "what can I do ?"
Most african youths and even adults seem totally overwhelmed by how far the developed world have gone and they have decide to just tag along. They would simply use  whatever education or knowledge they have is to help them enjoy what others have invented. For me, the first thing you can do as an african is to convince yourself that there is still more to be done for humanity and that you can be a part of it. Until there is this paradigm shift, we can never take charge of the development of this continent. We will continue to wait for others to come and "help" us. Taking ownership of our own development is the only way forward but we must believe that in spite of how far others have gone, we are still relevant in the global scheme of things.

Our society is not lost as there is not just hope but also a possibility to begin to build anew with what we already know while ensuring that they solve our actual problem, one item at a time. The African society is built on community, a community that is built on our cultural heritage. To ignore this, is to ignore the potential of the ancient Africa, the Africans who built the pyramids of Egypt, who built castles and explored well beyond borders. Let us not be quick to rule out who we are as Africans thereby blending what is unknown with a value system of a different but familiar modern culture. The African struggle is not for the Future but for the Identity of the past. This Identity is not lost, it is in us. It is in our fields, in our forests, in our homes, in our tongues, in our minds and in our hearts. Let us brave the day and come together as a single whole with all its moving parts functioning and the Africa of Today, will be an African City, full of beautiful communities, societies and cities, representing a cultures of not just colour but innovation, development, technology and prosperity because that is who we are and who we have always been.

The Future generation needs to know that it is not just about ‘who you are’ but about ‘who we are’. We can begin to create starting from this very day. Not longing for things we do not have or cannot yet do, but working daily with what we can and building it excellently to solving our challenges of the day, for they are many.

ABORDER 2017 SOUS L’ANGLE DE L’AUDACE - APPROACH 2017 FROM THE ANGLE OF BOLDNESS

APPROACH 2017 FROM THE ANGLE OF BOLDNESS
Our generation seems to have given up, we are all watching as spectators more or less overwhelmed by the range of problems that follow one another on the continent and refuse to take a hold on the time and on the current of the world.
No one, no one will change this continent for us. We must stop crying over our fate, stop victimization and be the first actors in the continent's mutations. 2017 could be a prelude, a pivotal year in which are the milestones that will one day be a milestone. This is the only wish we should wish for mother earth. It is not even a question of vows but of actions.
Boldness, passion, commitment, is what we miss together, and yet we have no choice, we have to push the borders. There is so much that can work better that one cannot afford to endure the present and accept it as it is. The youth, the demographic explosion, the raw materials from the angle of opportunity, the threat because of our passivity, the threat because of our propensity to look for scapegoats for all our evils ...
The experts at victimization constitute a wound for the continent, experts in all, international consultants, have held the same speeches since the sixties, sellers of dreams, cling to their Business: APE , CFA Franc, Franco-Africa, colonialism. They have demonstrated a craft, and yet ... the world continues its quiet march towards social progress, marginalizing us further.
The Hemisphere needs a cocktail of policies and strategies that improve productivity, address critical skills and infrastructure issues, foster innovation and creativity.

WHAT ABOUT AFRICA? - ET L'AFRIQUE?

"Those who build great companies understand that the ultimate throttle on growth for any great company is not markets, or technology, or competition, or products. It is one thing above all others: the ability to get and keep enough of the right people. What about Africa?" Lansana Gagny SAKHO
I know someone who until recently was working for an advertising agency that in this 21st century does not allow its staff to have any staff meetings. CCTV cameras are installed all over to watch staff's every movements and actions. Any minutes of lateness are calculated and subtracted from staff salary. However, staff work long hours sometimes until early hours of the morning without any overtime payment. There is no staff training, or promotion. Any staff that has the guts to complain is told that there are many waiting for jobs out there. Hmmmm... what about Africa? This might be an extreme case but many businesses I know around operate at some degree of this kind of "madness". How do we intend to build great companies if all we are thinking about is how to get enough money for us to live large? Until you make people your main priority, your business is a disaster waiting to happen. Happy employee, happy customers; Happy customers, happy business. Employing the right people and making them better people is indispensable for economic development. Enjoy your day!

Africa and her independent countries have seemingly been plagued by societal development issues ranging from poor leadership, corruption, poverty and lack of infrastructure to more obvious challenges like lack of electricity, access to good education, freedom of innovative expressions and an absence of basic benefits of a modern day society leading her to be in the forefront of poor communities as compared with the implementations of this age. There have been very many opinions, analysis, compositions, panels and contributions to arrive at a solution but the problem is basic in nature: a lack of understanding of the very word ‘development’ in itself... Education is a tool for empowerment and without the proper use,  abuse is imminent. In Africa, we have many academically educated professionals without the skills or environmental support for implementation… or so it seems. The pure fact would be as simple as learning to light a candle with fire and if there is no candle, you make one. This seems to be our most basic challenge as we are always looking this way or the other without taking stock of our own basic needs and how to meet them... Every community, society or country worked hard to develop its people, Africa included. With development comes expansion and expansion creates interaction which creates collision and in some cases, Chaos. This Chaos created a vacuum for the African history and heritage such that a connection to the development of the ancient Africa has only been an illusion. This illusion creates an uncertainty of identity and identity is the most important character for development of any people of the world. It is Identity that creates rules, laws and terms of negotiation. It is identity that creates the future.

I was sharing same idea with a friend. I cannot understand that for agriculture, we are using the same tool as the father's of our fathers: we should at least change, try to innovate, we should never be satisfied with the degree of sophistication of our father's tools: we should make them better" - Makhtar Lo

Nigeria has been facing some really hard times recently and this has forced many to consider alternative routes; the major one for me has been a shift towards locally produced rice. However, I discovered that the production of most locally grown rice has not improved from how I knew it very long time ago as a child. Eating rice those days used to be quite stressful because you had pick out stones and blow out chaff before you could cook it. Surprise! Surprise!! Surprise!!! the story is still the same with a large percentage of locally produced rice. Hmmm... how difficult can it be to have clean rice like they do  in other parts of the world? In Africa, from history I have read, there was technological progress made especially in the area of agriculture in the early times. Why have our brains suddenly gone to sleep and we have now become a dumping ground for consumption? This has so permeated the continent that even the financial institutions and government would rather support importation than encourage production and innovation. Are we going to allow this to continue? because right now that is what it seems. My concern is that the youths have to get it right mentally if we are to make any progress in this continent. If they do not make a mental detour from either running away or following in the corrupt footsteps of our present crop of leaders, we are in trouble. Think about this as you enjoy your weekend.

"What comes to my mind when I see this picture is that it shall be impossible to transform people living in food emergency situations or in any other survival emergency situation into warriors, unless they have the gut feeling this combat will help them solve their issue instantly, their only living concern being the former one.
That's why I keep saying that extreme indigence should always be worked out first.
An empty tummy can never either dream or think but can only cry"- C
écile Thiakane
This is a comment on the article posted on the 3rd of this month on innovation as a true crossroad for African development. Many times it seems like you are facing a brick wall when you discuss innovation and creativity in the African continent because all most people think about here, is survival. In this position, the creative juices of many cease to flow but this is where we also have those who Cecile has described as those  having the "gut feeling" who are motivated by what they can do to become a solution to these dire situations. Like they say, the same boiling water that hardens an egg softens the potato. As African youths we have to see beyond these hardships and incompetences and look to how we can use any opportunities at our disposal to make some progress even if it is just arriving at a point mentally where we see ourselves as solutions. Let us look at the possibilities of preventing ourselves and others from sleeping on an empty stomach rather than allowing the situation to take life from us. Remember that one day you may come into a position of leadership; you prepare now not then. Enjoy your day!

Information technology has become indispensable for the transformation of the continent, the top ten African countries of the new ICT Development Index 2013, established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), are classified only between 64th and 109th square. Improving Africa's competitiveness will require effective action in two key areas: the infrastructure gap and the implementation of genuine policies to foster innovation.
African states need a cocktail of policies and strategies that improve productivity, address critical skills and infrastructure issues, and foster innovation. In countries such as Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica and India, governments play a leading role in developing competitiveness and innovation policy strategies.

According to the Global Competition Report 2012-2013, 14 of the 20 least competitive economies are African. This can be explained, among other things, by the precariousness of the institutions, insufficient technological advances and a narrow base of competences for an innovation economy. The report of the World Economic Forum shows that while Africa and developing Asia had similar productivity in the 1960s, which was about US $ 20 per hour worked, that of Africa fell To about US $ 12 in 2012, and that of developing Asia soared to around US $ 40. Globalization, rapid technological advances and integration into global value chains require continually increasing competitiveness. But without a policy of innovation it is almost impossible to integrate into globalization.
Innovation & competitiveness, financing: a true way of the cross for the African continent, it is nevertheless one of the necessary ways to position the continent on the path of true growth generating wealth for the communities.
