PROFESSIONAL OR POLITICIAN? - PROFESSIONNEL OU POLITICIEN?

I watched an interview this morning which is not usual with me because I am weary of all talk and no progress especially when views expressed most times are very partisan. I was captured by the conversation with the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria and my hope for this nation was once again renewed not because of what he was saying although that was wonderful but because of the heart that I felt it was coming from. He knew what he was saying and communicated it well but most importantly he showed that he understood the needs of the people and how to meet those needs when the occasion presented itself. He made mention of the enormous challenges of lack of institutions and structures but he did not dwell on them at all. He concentrated on how he would handle the issues. He kept making reference to " a professional in politics as opposed to the politician in politics" For me this is the difference between a leader and a politician, The former seeks to empower people and make life better while the latter only looks for ways of getting re-elected and continue in his/her political career. Politicians think of us only if it will help them remain in office while a leader thinks of us because he/she wants to better our lives and also leave a legacy. Whether this Governor will walk his talk is left to history; for now he seems to be on that right path. What are you up to? Are you looking to make money and a name for yourself or you are working to make life better for those around you and leave a legacy for others to follow? Enjoy your day!

HAPPY AFRICA DAY! - HEUREUX JOURNEE DE L'AFRIQUE !

I was at a branch of the United Bank for Africa this morning and I was pleasantly surprised to see all the staff gorgeously dressed in their ceremonial cultural attire accompanied by background cultural music. When in got to my turn i asked the guy attending to me what the occasion was and he said the were celebrating Africa Day. This brought a huge smile to my face and I noticed that as people entered the bank their eyes popped. I wish to join them, Ignite Africa Facebook page (from where I got all these beautiful pictures) and as many as are proud to be Africans in celebrating AFRICA DAY. I especially rejoice with my constituents (the Youths) because they are our hope for a developed continent. Arise and shine youths of Africa, do not allow anyone to intimidate you. HAPPY AFRICA DAY!

RELAY RACE OR HUNDRED METER DASH? - UNE COURSE DE RELAIS OU UNE COURSE BRUSQUE DE CENT METERS?

For the past eleven years, the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) has organised a youth internship program (YPIP) where youth medical professionals are given opportunities to work with mentors in health organisations across the West African sub-region to gain international experience in order to boost health care in the sub-region. I have had the opportunity to work with these mentors to help prepare them for the mentoring process and it has been a rare privilege. We just finished this year's workshop at the WAHO headquarters at Bobo- Dioullasso in Burkina Faso. It was a time of quality interactions and one thing we looked at is the role of the mentor as a trans-generational baton holder. The next generation would have an easier experience and move faster if they had mentors that could help them receive the baton and continue from where others stopped and further improve the process and institutions. What we discovered however is that in Africa most people are not doing a relay race, they are doing a hundred meter dash. In this case, the next generation has to start all over learning from their own mistakes which could have been avoided if there was mentoring. This is a point I would like us to ponder; are you running a relay race or you are doing a hundred meter dash? Will your life experience make it easier for the ones coming behind because you have made it your duty to mentor and help them along the way? This perspective will change the way you relate as you do your job. Give this a thought and enjoy your day!
Mentors interacting with their mentees during the workshop.

CONSTITUENCY PROJECTS? - LES PROJETS DE CIRCONSCRIPTION?

There are some terms that I hear these days that are quite surprising to me because I thought that they were just a part of political parlance but had no real relevance. Due to my present place of abode, I have in the past two years seen in a way that I previously only imagined how a great percentage of Nigerians really suffer. The sad thing is I have also realised just how little effort is needed to meet their basic needs. It is not rocket science, all that is needed is a heart that is connected to the people. Unfortunately, due to their state of ignorance and financial hardship, they trade their "birthright for a pot of pottage" during the elections. The politicians know this and they relish in it; the longer the people stay in this state, the better it is for their political foolishness.Years ago, one of the judges at an award event Joseph's Place, Nigeria organised, said until we get to the grassroot, we have not done anything. I am living the reality of that situation now, these are people who have been almost completely marginalised. If this new song of "consistency projects" is something of any importance, I believe the situation would be different for these people in the suburbs. They are a forgotten people bringing up a generation that has no hope whatsoever except as recruits for political thuggery and abandoned single mothers. The closest to this concept that I can remember is a lady legislator who used to distribute school materials to her constituents when the school year was about to begin. We have abandoned projects littered all over the place by successive governments, constituency projects are a figment of the imagination of those supposed to carry them out. I rest my case with apologies to those who have completed invisible constituency projects. Thanks to my readers for allowing me to digress a bit. Enjoy your week!
