AFRICAN SUCCESS STORY

A 22-year-old Nigerian has emerged one of the top graduating students of John Hopkins University in the United States with a Grade Point Average of 3.98 out of a possible 4.0 to earn a degree in Neurosciences
A 22-year-old Nigerian, Emmanuel Ohuabunwa, has made history at John Hopkins University, United States of America. Ohuabunwa from Arochukwu, Abia State, has done the nation proud by becoming the first black man to make a Grade Point Average of 3.98 out of 4.0 to bag a degree in Neurosciences in the university. He was also adjudged as having the highest honours during the graduation that was held on May 24 this year.
In an online interview with our correspondent, Ohuabunwa, who was born in Okota, Lagos and attended Lilly Fields Primary School, Lagos, said he left Nigeria after his junior secondary school education at Air Force Comprehensive School, Ibadan, Oyo State.
“My parents moved the whole family when I was 13 years old. I was about to begin SS1 at Air Force, Ibadan. When I got to the US, I was enrolled with my age mates, which meant at 13, I was in middle school. I went to Fondren Middle School, which was in the middle of the ghetto. That was one of the darkest years for me because I encountered a lot of peer pressure. Some of the students, ignorant about Africa, bullied me and called me names such as ‘African booty scratcher’ because to them, Africans were dirty and scratched their butts all the time.
“Some asked me if I lived in mud huts and ate faeces for breakfast. I remember one day, when I was walking to the school bus, a boy came from behind and punched me in the face, called me an African and walked away. It took everything in me not to retaliate. I knew that God had put me in the U.S for a purpose and it did not involve fighting or selling drugs or doing the wrong things.
“My experience during that year gave me a thick skin. I learned to stand for what I thought was right even when the opposition seemed insurmountable. I also learned to look at the positive in all situations. Even though these kids were bullying me, I was still gaining an opportunity to school in America and nothing would stop me from making the best of this opportunity.
“The shocker was that the kid that punched me in the face was black. I would have expected the blacks to be nicer to me. Nevertheless, I don’t blame those kids because they were ignorant about Africa. All they knew about us was the stuff they had watched on TV or documentaries, showing primitive African tribes, living in the jungle and making noises like monkeys.
“In regards to the whites, there might have been some minor episodes but again I don’t blame them for it because it is a problem with stereotypes,” he said.
But would he come back to Nigeria after the completion of his programme, he said yes.
“I am absolutely interested in the health care policy decisions in Nigeria. Because there are many changes that need to occur, I will not rule out the possibility of coming back after my studies, in order to join hands with the leaders to make these changes possible.’’

DO NOT ALLOW YOUR FARM TO LIE FALLOW - NE LAISSEZ PAS VOTRE FERME EN JACHERE

In the region where I come from land is a family inheritance that is guarded very jealously, family members will do anything within their power to keep the territorial inheritance. In fact I did not know how serious this was until recently when my family relocated to the village. I hear all kinds of comments about the family land and what they are doing to keep it within the family. This is not to say they cannot sell some portions to others, even non-natives for development but they still save some portions for the family , even for future generations.
However, when the land is not properly taken care of, others will trespass and develop without the permission of the family and before the family realizes, their land is either totally overrun or there are litigation all over the courts.
My main aim in this discuss is the way that we as Africans blame foreigners for taking over our territorial space; during slavery and colonization, that cry would have been realistic not now. You cannot allow your farm to lie fallow for long periods and complain when others take advantage and cultivate your farm. If you cannot cultivate your farm for whatever reasons, you can lease it to someone who will use it for that period but when you do not show any interest in cultivating your farm, someone else will and this time, it might be completely taken from you since there was no proper agreement and the person cannot be blamed.
We as Africans must learn to value our farm so that we either cultivate it ourselves or we partner with others who are willing to help us, that way the partnership is mutual and the development is profitable to all.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR FARM FALLOW THEN TURN BACK AND COMPLAIN THAT SOMEONE HAS TAKEN IT FROM YOU.

There are those who spend a lot of time in front of their TV sets just for entertainment but I have discovered that if we spent just a tiny fraction of that time looking beyond entertainment, we would find images and statements that could inspire us to go beyond what we can presently imagine. I was watching a documentary this morning on CCTV on the UAE PAVILLION and it drove home the point for me that thoughts are living and they can either grow or die. If we have an idea and we do not give it serious attention, it will wither and die but if we feed it by thinking deeply and critically about it, it will grow to astonishing dimensions. This is the reason an architect can take a look at the sand dunes in the UAE and come up with something as magnificent as the UAE PAVILLION. The problem why we do not have more people coming up with desired changes and progress is the fact that we trivialize our thoughts or maybe we are too mentally lazy to stay with them until they grow and crystallize. Some of us speak out our thoughts too soon and allow the opinions of others to choke them to death. Some have too many thoughts coming at them like a flood and they do not have the discipline and patience to sift through them and give room for the main ones to be fertilized and grow into actions and the realization of a vision. To develop an idea we must allow it to be properly fertilized in the soil of meditation and education; these are no shortcuts, they are painstaking processes. Any major achievement the world over, has taken time, research, patience and sweat, yours cannot be different.

PERCEIVING INEQUALITY - SAISISSANT L'INEGALITE

We cannot overemphasis the power of perception, that is why we must do all that is in our power to educate ourselves in such a way as to have a broad knowledge of any subject matter before we draw our conclusions. In 2000 I was in France under the auspices of the French Embassy for a training on modern teaching methods. I met a dutch citizen in her mid-twenties who introduced herself to me and started asking questions that I didn't believe that people could ask in the 21st century. When I told her I was from Nigeria, she asked if I was married and was surprised that I was in France for training despite the fact that I was married because she had heard that once you were married in Africa, you were forbidden to come out your home. She continued on and on, I was flabbergasted to say the least, but at the end of the conversation, some of her views changed. Let’s take the recent comments from the CEO of Microsoft for example, I don’t believe what he said about how females should not ask for pay rise but should wait for "good karma"was what he actually meant as he later explained but the fact of the matter is, the way we have been consciously or unconsciously “made” to see things can come out even when we do not have such intentions. The fundamental issue #inequality is that of how we perceive life; if we have been made to see others in a certain light, if we do not make an effort to educate ourselves like we are doing #BAD2014, the problem #inequality will remain. When we talk of gender inequality, it usually has its roots in traditional societal beliefs; the same applies to racial, corporate inequality etc we must rise up to the challenge of continuous education #blogaction14 especially among the youths so that we can contain this virus. What we see most of the time is anger and malice against those whose discriminate against us and treat us as lesser humans. Most times, those at the receiving end become hostile towards those who consider them unequal but what that does is further fuel the fire #inequality because these people will want to maintain their attitude of superiority. WHAT WE NEED IS EDUCATION AND THAT IS WHAT WE ARE DOING #oct16. We cannot stop advocacy, education and dialogue until we see this ugly monster reduce in all its ramifications.
www.blogactionday.org

IT'S UP TO YOU - CELA DEPEND DE VOUS

When you talk to people who think that their lives are a shipwreck, you will notice that all they are always focusing on the externals; people and circumstances. They are waiting for people and circumstances to change before they can think of how to bring out their ship from troubled waters. People in this situation wait sometimes forever or by some stroke of luck they find some “guardian angel” that helps them out of this precarious situation. Life does not have plenty room for those who will not take personal responsibility for what is happening in their lives. Unfortunately, these are those at the bottom of the ladder trying to pull down those who have decided to brave it and climb. The interesting fact is that if we make up our minds to defy the odds, the climb will get easier with each step. However, until we start, we will never find out what it really takes to get life going. It is this lack of will to overcome the odds that makes a lot of people look for excuses why they should not climb the ladder of success. What is intriguing about life is the fact that we gravitate towards whatever we believe; when we are looking for excuses not to succeed, we will find ourselves attracting these kinds of people and we are encouraged to continue on that path and vice versa. Look around you and you will understand why you are in your present position. If you want to change, change your circle of influence. People say this is not easy and I ask them a simple question “if there was a large monetary price attached to this action would you hesitate?” The answer is usually “no” We forget that money is ephemeral and success is life changing for us and humanity in general.

SWIM TO THE BOAT 5 - NAGEZ VERS LE BATEAU 5

The issue is not that people do not know that they need a way (the boat) to get to where they are going, the challenge is how to get into the boat; should we wait for the boat to come to us or should we brave it and swim towards it> Like we have previously said, it is possible to wait, however the problem is the waves of the sea might not allow the boat to reach us quick enough for us to reach our destination before OUR ONE LIFETIME EXPIRES. It is for this reason that wise people who have made the journey of life with some success have advised us to swim towards the boat once we figure out that there might be a delay. I was working with a youth some years ago who believed that he had a work to do with teenagers as his contribution to humanity. He wasn’t interested in doing something else and he didn’t even have the resources to go further in his educational pursuit or fund his vision. In these parts, this is a very familiar scenario and it can either shut the individual down completely or push him/her to heights never imagined. After working with this individual, who was pretty frustrated by now, for some time, I told him to swim towards the boat. In this case, I asked him to prepare a plan on how he could go to secondary schools and ask to have pep talks with the students during the morning assembly sessions. I wasn’t asking him to do what others have not done before but that is the last time he came to me. There are people who do not want to do the swimming, they would rather that others help them bring the boat to shore. The problem with this is that even when someone helps them to bring the boat, they will expect that person or another to help them drive the boat while they sit and give directions. The best we can do is tell people what to do and how they can achieve their dreams, if we go over board and steer the boat, they will give up their dreams and follow us wherever we steer the boat. The danger is that we will leave our own dreams behind and neither we nor they will arrive at our desired destination.

SWIM TOWARDS THE BOAT 4 - NAGEZ VERS LE BATEAU 4

I was watching CNN AFRICAN VOICES this morning when I saw a story that buttressed what we discussed in our last blog discussion; it is difficult for anyone or any organization to say no to anyone who says that they want to offer services for free. Patricia Mawuli, the first female licensed Ghanaian pilot was rejected for training as a pilot because she was female but when she offered to work without pay; things changed. Today she is a licensed pilot and a huge inspiration to young Ghanaians and I believe, African women. What are you doing to prove that when you believe in your dream enough, ways will open up for you to accomplish it? Many of us in these parts, believe that no matter how we try, opportunities are too few for us to make a difference so we settle for less; just the basics of life. The human spirit is colour blind, so if you give it room, you will be surprised at what you will achieve with your gifts and your vision. Swimming towards the ship means allowing yourself to take actions that many are afraid to take; ONLY THE COURAGEOUS defy the odds and take the plunge. The funny thing is that many find that the water is not as cold, as rough and as dangerous as they imagined. It is never too late to swim towards the ship, if we however decide to wait for the ship, it might arrive too late. Decide to take the plunge right now; take a pen and begin to write, open a book and begin to read, pick up the phone and make that call, send that email, just do something to kick start that dream and you will be surprised how easy it is to take one step at a time.

SWIM TO THE BOAT 3 - NAGEZ VERS LE BATEAU 3

In our environment where youth unemployment is high, I have discovered that volunteering is far from people’s minds due to the need to survive. Most people would rather just stay at home, brood and complain. I have a friend who didn’t get a job after she graduated who decided to get her Masters degree; in fact she got two from England and America. This didn’t still solve the problem so she decided to learn to bake and she started making wonderful cakes. Then she decided that she wanted more, which in her case meant to work in her area of specialization. So while she baked, she also decided to volunteer with a government agency by helping them in the area of data collection and other areas of her expertise. Guess what, after about a year or so she was hired and she has risen to the post of an assistant director. It doesn’t always work this perfectly because I have another friend this route didn’t work for. But then again, we must realize that not only our professional skills count, we also need to have good interpersonal relationship skills. When I am working with unemployed youths, I tell them that volunteering is a way of gathering experience which is a prerequisite by most employers of labour. Swimming towards the boat means you are ready to roll up your sleeves and get dirty in places where you will be noticed. Very few organizations will turn back someone who wants to offer free services. You may say it has never been done, fine, then try to start it; swimming towards the boat is blazing a trail or taking a road less traveled. Don’t waste your energy brooding and complaining; use it productively to put yourself where those who need your competence can see what you have to offer.

SWIM TO THE BOAT 2 - NAGEZ VERS LE BATEAU 2

People are so used to making excuses. For most of our lives, we are just satisfied with finding excuses to be where we are. During a session with some youth corps members during their year of service to the nation after graduation, I asked them what they would contribute to humanity. There were various answers based on excuses why they won’t be able to contribute anything meaningful. Then one of them said that those of us in Africa do not have a level playing ground as those in the developed nations. I was beginning to agree with her when it occurred to me that the internet has greatly bridged that gap, so I asked them what they had done with the internet to improve on their fields of studies since they left school because most of them had smartphones. They spend a lot of money from their little stipends making sure they are connected to the worldwide web. As we continued, we found out that most of them were glued to the social media for one purpose: to socialize. Just one of them said that she just recently said to herself that there is more she can do with the internet and after some search; she began a diploma course in an area of interest that will help her in her career. Swimming towards the ship means that we have to do all that is our power to find a way to reach our destination. This means getting out of your comfort zone and looking for ways, including taking calculated risks to discover how to get there. It means ignoring the fact that the ground is not level and seeking ways of navigating the rough terrain. When you jump into the water, with every stroke or every step, you get closer to the boat; the means of accomplishing your dream and contributing your quota to mankind.

SWIM TO THE BOAT 1 - NAGEZ VERS LE BATEAU 1

We hear people talking about dreams and visions and to some of us it is bla, bla, bla. Some of us have come to a point of saying “oh! Just shut up! Reason being that this kind of talk actually makes life more complicated for them. They do not seem to understand how they can go from point A to B in spite of all these conferences and seminars organized by all and sundry. It is amazing how people can get to the point of equating life with only formulas and principles. In order to simplify life we can actually make it more complicated by telling people how to live their lives. We do not pay much attention to personal idiosyncrasies and we expect them to fit in a mold that is culturally, historically, politically or otherwise very different from what they want or what they. WHAT I WANT TO POINT OUR ATTENTION TO IN THIS SERIES IS THE NEED TO GO FOR IT RIGHT FROM WHERE YOU ARE. The popular saying is that we should not wait for the boat, like most of us do, but swim towards it. What we want to note here is that everyone has a destination and also has a vehicle to take him/her to that destination. Furthermore, we have to look at the fact that it is our duty to get into that vehicle to get to our desired destination. Until we get to the realisation that we need to get into this vehicle, we can never arrive where we are going, so we need to understand that it is up to us to work out a way of getting in. Most of our lives, we wait for vehicles that take us to our destination or for people to help us get to where we are going. However, to really make a difference, I have discovered that you cannot afford these luxuries; you have to step out, find your vehicle and do all you can to get into it.
